Modi govt ‘fearless, decisive’, says President Murmu, cites war on Covid, terror | India News

NEW DELHI: President Droupadi Murmu Tuesday showcased fearlessness, decisiveness and stability among the hallmarks of the Modi government and emphasised these strengths have not only helped it tackle numerous challenges and played a crucial role in delivering transformative governance to the country, but also allowed the world to look towards India with high hopes.
In her maiden address to the joint sitting of the two Houses of Parliament that marked the commencement of the Budget session, Murmu listed India’s war on Covid-19 as a major achievement. “From surgical strike to a firm crackdown on terrorism, from a befitting response to every misadventure from LoC and LAC, from abrogation of Article 370 and triple talaq, my government has been recognised as a decisive one,” she said.
“My government has always kept the country’s interest paramount and shown the will power to completely transform the policies and strategies when required,” she said.
Referring specifically to India’s war on Covid-19 and how the country administered over 220 crore doses of the Covid-19 vaccine in two years, the President said, “The stable and decisive government has enabled us to deal with the biggest calamity in 100 years and the situation that arose thereafter. Wherever in the world there is political instability, those countries are beset with severe crises today. But India is in a much better position than the rest of the world due to the decisions taken by my government in the national interest.”
Approved by the Union Cabinet, the hour-long address to the joint sitting, perhaps the last such gathering in Parliament House before the two Houses move to the new address next door, encapsulated all the themes—infrastructure expansion, welfare schemes, anti-corruption measures and upgrade of security apparatus, which are going to be the government’s main themes for the 2024 campaign.
It also focused on the Modi government seeking to emerge as the Global South while holding the presidency of G-20 and improving ties with the developed world. “India has emerged as a country that is connecting today’s divided world in some form or the other. India is today among those countries that are reinforcing the trust in global supply chain. Therefore, world is looking towards India with high hopes,” Murmu said.
The President also made an elaborate reference to the government’s efforts to fight corruption, something which would be an important component of the quiver for 2024.
