AGRA: Police in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday registered an FIR over a religious slogan allegedly raised inside the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) campus during a Republic Day event on Thursday. The slogan was allegedly raised by a student dressed in a National Cadet Corps (NCC) uniform soon after the national flag was unfurled. Taking cognisance of a purported video of the event, the varsity’s administration after conducting an inquiry, suspended a BA first-year student on Friday.
SP (Aligarh city), Kuldeep Singh Gunawat, said, “A case has been registered under sections 153-B (remarks likely to cause disharmony, or feeling of enmity or hatred or ill-will) and 505 (mischief) of the Indian Penal Code on Saturday. The video clip in question has been sent for forensic tests. Further action will be taken once we get the report.”
The police action was initiated after Yogesh Varshney, a local activist, filed a complaint against the student in question. Speaking about the matter, AMU proctor, Mohammad Waseem, said, “Students were heading back to their hostel after the Republic Day event, when one of them raised a slogan. The AMU administration has issued a suspension order following an internal inquiry in the matter.
